Scaling And Root Planing

Posted on 11/7/2022 by Life Long Dental
Scaling And Root PlaningScaling and root planing are dental procedures commonly known as deep cleaning. Scaling involves the removal of plaque and tartar below the gum line whereas root planning involves the removal of tartar from the roots below the gum line.

How is scaling done?

Root scaling procedure is done by a dental hygienist and one may need more than one visit to your dentist. A vibrant tool known as an ultrasonic scaler is used for the scaling process whereby the scaler's metal tip removes the tartar from your teeth' gum line.

A water spray on the scalar then removes tartar and flushes plaque from gum pockets. Our dentist then uses a manual dental scaler and scratching device called a curette to remove small amounts of tartar left.

How is root planing done?

For root planing, our dentist uses a tool to slowly push aside your gum tissues making them exposed to the surface. By use of a vibrating metal tool as used in scaling, tartar is chipped off from the roots leaving them smooth. In some instances, our dentist may inject an antibiotic directly into your gum to kill off the bacteria.

Aftercare measures for scaling and root planing

After a deep cleaning process, you may experience pain for a short period and tooth responsiveness for up to seven days. Your gums may also be enlarged, sensitive, and draining. Our dentist therefore may recommend a pill or a mouthwash to prevent disease, relieve pain, or help in recovery.

Excellent dental care at home is essential for preventing gum disease from worsening. Clean your teeth twice a day with a soft brush and in between your teeth every day, avoid tobacco and visit our dentist regularly.
