What Happens By Not Brushing Your Teeth?

Posted on 3/7/2022 by Life Long Dental
What Happens By Not Brushing Your Teeth? It is well known that not brushing regularly can have long-term consequences. Most people don't realize what happens overnight in a mouth that hasn't been brushed. Basically, bacteria and germs get to hang out all night when you don't brush. This is what happens to an unbrushed mouth overnight.

Less Saliva Makes Your Teeth Vulnerable

At night, your body and brain take a break. While you sleep, your saliva production also slows down. Saliva production averages two to four pints per person per day, with the greatest amount produced in the late afternoon and the least during the night. It might seem unglamorous, but saliva is crucial for maintaining our oral health, especially when it comes to protecting our teeth and gums against harmful bacteria. Saliva contains valuable proteins and minerals that protect our teeth and gums by neutralizing acid and limiting bacterial growth. As saliva flows, food particles are washed away. Essentially, your teeth are more vulnerable if your saliva slows down. Brushing your teeth every night prevents any bacteria from remaining from eating during the day.

Bacteria Moves In

In which case, let's talk about bacteria that cause problems. As well as humans, bacteria enjoy a late-night snack. Well-fed bacteria grow faster. Unbrushed food leaves behind a virtual smorgasbord for bacteria, encouraging them to set up camp and multiply. After they feed, bacteria excrete waste. Acidic wastes are excreted by bacteria when they consume sugary sweets, dairy, and starches. If left on your teeth overnight, this acid begins to eat away at the enamel, eventually causing cavities. ADA recommends that you use toothpaste that contains fluoride. As a result, fluoride strengthens the enamel on teeth, making it more difficult for acids to dissolve them and cause cavities.
