Dangers Associated with Using Hard Toothbrush Bristles

Posted on 9/6/2021 by Life Long Dental
Dangers Associated with Using Hard Toothbrush BristlesWalking down the grocery store or pharmacy aisle, the consumer has many choices when considering a new toothbrush. Not only are there many sizes, colors, and brand names to choose from, there is a wide range of bristles to evaluate before purchasing a toothbrush. We want to help you choose a toothbrush that is best for your mouth. While it may not be a top pick as far as color or style, we feel it is important to choose a toothbrush that is good for your teeth and gums. If you're not sure what toothbrush is best for you, we can help!

The Danger in Using a Hard Bristled Toothbrush

Quite simply, you can damage your teeth if you use a hard-bristled toothbrush. You are more likely to aggressively brush your gums with a hard-bristled toothbrush. This can cause excessive irritation to your gumline. The stiff texture of a hard bristle toothbrush can even scratch your gums. Your gums could bleed and swell, which is a gateway to infection. Most people brush their teeth too aggressively anyway, so to reduce this potential as well as other problems, we suggest everyone in your family use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

We Can Show You How to Brush

We make sure our patients know how to brush their teeth properly at each dental cleaning and exam. While this may sound remedial, we have found that we can help patients avoid common problems like damaged enamel, root surfaces, and gum tissue by doing patient education. We want to help you brush your teeth well and avoid problems associated with hard bristled toothbrushes. Give us a call today to schedule your next dental cleaning and exam.

We look forward to working with you so that you can have a bright smile both now and in the future.
