Everything You Need to Know About Baby Teeth

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Amy
Everything You Need to Know About Baby TeethYour baby can start growing primary teeth as early as 5 months. Most children have a set of 20 teeth by the time they are 3 years of age.

Milk teeth usually tend to fall off by the time your child is 6 or 7 years old. Here are 5 aspects regarding baby teeth that you need to know about:

Purpose of Baby Teeth

Baby teeth are a child's first set of teeth and last for only a few years. Nevertheless, they play an important role in a baby's future dental health. A child learns to chew, smile and speak properly with the help of baby teeth. They are usually smaller in size as compared to permanent teeth in order to keep the space required for permanent teeth to emerge.

Baby Teeth Care

Children need to brush their teeth twice a day and floss them at least once a day. If you have an infant, gently whip their gums to maintain oral hygiene. Children younger than 3 years old require only a small smear of toothpaste, while those between 3 and 6 years of age should use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

Baby Teeth and Decay

Milk teeth are as susceptible to decay as permanent teeth. 40% of the children have one or more cavities in their primary teeth. The most common reason for the formation of cavities is excess intake of sugary foods, followed by poor hygiene. Give your child a controlled amount of sweets or sugary drinks. If your baby drinks from a sippy cup or bottle, fill it with water rather than juice.

Growing baby teeth is an exciting milestone for your child. Start early care to encourage healthy oral habits. If you have any concerns regarding your child's primary set of teeth, visit us at Life Long Dental or call us at Life Long Dental.
