How Oral Piercings Can Damage Your Teeth

Posted on 6/8/2020 by Life Long Dental
How Oral Piercings Can Damage Your TeethThere's nothing wrong with expressing yourself as long as it isn't harming others. What you do with your body is ultimately up to you and we aren't here to stop you from being who you are. But we need to talk about things that can damage your teeth and oral health overall- which includes oral piercings. This is the truth about this form of piercing.

Oral Piercings Can Cause Infection

Leaving an opening on your body such as a wound puts you at risk for that spot to become infected. It is no different when it comes to oral piercing- in fact- piercings in the mouth are one of the most dangerous places you can have because your mouth is packed full of bacteria which makes said infections a higher chance of happening.

It is easy to see why this is a recipe for disaster and careful consideration needs to be applied before deciding to use oral piercings or continue using them. That's not all, however, oral piercings can also potentially damage teeth.

Oral Piercings Can Damage Teeth And Gums

Sticking a piece of metal into your mouth puts it at risk for damage. It is not uncommon for people to succumb to mouth injuries due to oral piercings. All it takes is poor installation/placement and something causing the piercing to move to cause serious injuries such as cracked/scratched teeth or your gums being cut.

If you are persistent when it comes piercings despite the risk, we can't stop you. But we can at least advise that you research the safest possible ways to use them- or simply stick to ear piercings which still isn't the best, but it is generally safer than doing it to your mouth!
