Signs of a Failed Root Canal

Posted on 5/1/2025 by Life Long Dental
A man holding his jaw due to pain from an unsuccessful root canal.A root canal is a common dental procedure that can save a tooth that is infected or damaged. The procedure involves removing the infected pulp from the inside of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then filling and sealing the canals. In most cases, root canals are successful and allow patients to keep their natural teeth. However, there are times when a root canal may fail.

What are the Signs of a Failed Root Canal?

There are several signs that may indicate that a root canal has failed. These include:

•  Pain: This is the most common sign of a failed root canal. The pain may be constant or it may come and go. It may be sharp or throbbing, and it may be worse when you bite down.
•  Swelling: Swelling in the gums or face can also be a sign of a failed root canal. The swelling may be accompanied by redness and tenderness.
•  Drainage: If you notice drainage from the tooth, it could be a sign that the infection has not cleared up. The drainage may be pus or blood.
•  Loose tooth: A tooth that has had a root canal may become loose if the infection has damaged the bone around the tooth.
•  Darkening of the tooth: A tooth that has had a root canal may darken over time. This is because the tooth is no longer receiving blood flow from the pulp.

What Causes a Root Canal to Fail?

There are several reasons why a root canal may fail. These include:

•  The infection was not completely removed. This can happen if the root canals are not properly cleaned and disinfected.
•  The tooth was not properly sealed. This can allow bacteria to re-enter the tooth and cause another infection.
•  The tooth was fractured. A fracture in the tooth can make it difficult to properly clean and seal the root canals.
•  The patient did not follow post-treatment instructions. It is important to follow your dentist's instructions after a root canal, such as avoiding hard foods and using a mouthguard.

What to Do if You Think Your Root Canal Has Failed

If you think your root canal has failed, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible. They will be able to examine the tooth and determine the cause of the failure. They may also be able to treat the problem and save the tooth. However, in some cases, the tooth may need to be extracted.

Oral Care and Restoration Dentistry

Taking good care of your teeth and gums is the best way to prevent the need for a root canal. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day, and seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. If you do need a root canal, it is important to follow your dentist's instructions carefully to help ensure the success of the procedure.

Restorative dentistry offers a variety of treatments to help restore the health and function of your teeth. If you are experiencing any of the signs of a failed root canal, be sure to see your dentist as soon as possible to discuss your treatment options.
