Is Flossing Really Necessary?

Posted on 10/1/2024 by Life Long Dental
Close up of woman flossing her front teeth. For years, we've been told that flossing is essential for maintaining good oral hygiene. But recently, there's been some debate about whether flossing is truly necessary. So, what's the truth? Is flossing really important?

The Importance of Gum Health

To understand the importance of flossing, we first need to understand the role of our gums. Healthy gums fit snugly around our teeth, providing support and protection. When plaque and bacteria build up on our teeth, they irritate the gums, leading to inflammation and infection. This condition is known as gum disease, also called periodontal disease.

Gum disease is a serious problem that can lead to several complications, including:

•  Receding gums: This can expose the sensitive root surfaces of your teeth, making them more prone to decay and sensitivity.
•  Bone loss: In severe cases, gum disease can destroy the bone that supports your teeth, leading to loose teeth and even tooth loss.
•  Increased risk of other health problems: Studies have linked gum disease to an increased risk of other health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

How Flossing Helps

Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can’t reach. This helps prevent the buildup of plaque, which is the main cause of gum disease.

While flossing is an effective way to remove plaque and bacteria, it's important to note that it is not a substitute for brushing. Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste is still the most important thing you can do to maintain good oral health.

Other Ways to Keep Your Gums Healthy

In addition to flossing and brushing, there are other things you can do to keep your gums healthy, including:

•  Eating a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help keep your gums healthy.
•  Avoiding sugary drinks: Sugary drinks can contribute to plaque buildup and gum disease.
•  Regular dental checkups: These allow your dentist to identify and treat early signs of gum disease.

The Bottom Line

While there is some debate about the effectiveness of flossing, the majority of dental professionals still recommend it as an important part of a comprehensive oral care routine. Flossing helps remove plaque and bacteria from between your teeth, which can help prevent gum disease and other oral health problems. If you're not sure whether flossing is right for you, talk to your dentist. They can help you develop an oral care routine that is right for your individual needs.
