Tips on Managing Toothaches at Home

Posted on 8/15/2024 by Life Long Dental
Pained woman suffering from bruxism and rubbing her jaw while in bed.Toothaches can be very painful and make daily life difficult. While seeing a dentist is recommended, here are some tips to help manage toothache discomfort until you can get dental treatment.

Identify the Source

Try to figure out which tooth hurts and what may be causing the pain. Dental decay, a cracked tooth, infected gums, or other issues can lead to toothache. Knowing the source helps pick the right relief measure.

Rinse With Warm Salt Water

Swishing warm salty water around your mouth can help reduce swelling and wash away any bits of food stuck in your teeth. Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Swish this around the hurting area for a few minutes to remove the infection and soothe the pain.

Use Dental Pain Relievers

Over-the-counter dental pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can temporarily reduce toothache discomfort. Follow dosage instructions, and do not exceed the recommended amount.

Apply Cold Compress

Applying a cold compress against the cheek near the hurting tooth reduces inflammation. Wrap ice cubes or a frozen gel pack in a towel and apply to the face for 10-15 minutes. Repeat every couple of hours as needed.

Try Temporary Filling Material

Using temporary filling material can provide relief for pain from a cracked, broken, or cavitated tooth. These are available over the counter and can be gently pushed into the tooth cavity to lessen exposure and irritation.

Take OTC Oral Anesthetic

Oral pain relief gels or rinses with benzocaine numb the area temporarily. Apply these topical anesthetics sparingly to the sore spot as directed for quick relief.

Get Professional Dental Care for Lasting Relief

While home remedies may provide temporary relief, it is important to get evaluated by your dentist. They can diagnose the cause and provide appropriate treatment for lasting pain relief.

Toothaches often signify a problem needing attention. Seek dental treatment and also try these methods to manage discomfort until you can get dental care. With the proper remedy, you can gain relief and be on your way to a pain-free smile.
