How To Help Your Baby When They Are Teething

Posted on 1/15/2024 by Weo Admin
Close up image of a baby girl with teethIf your baby is teething, you know how incredibly difficult it is to soothe them. Teething babies can experience excessive drooling, pain, and a low-grade fever. Parents often say that nursing a baby through the teething process is extremely difficult because a baby cannot communicate to them how much pain they are in and where their pain is centered.

Signs of Teething

If you suspect your baby is teething, you may notice some signs. First, many babies who are teething run a low-grade fever, which means their fever will usually be lower than 100.5 F. If your child is running a fever higher than 101 F, they may be suffering from an ear infection or a virus. Also, many babies who are teething drool excessively. While some babies may drool a little during feeding, excessive drooling usually means your baby is teething. You might also notice that their gums, which are normally pink or around the same color as their skin tone, are red or darker colored. You might also note that their gums are swollen. If you feel around their gums, you may notice hard bumps, which indicate that the teeth will erupt soon.

Battling to understand and soothe a teething baby? Here are some tips.

How To Help Your Baby

Although teething can be challenging, there are things you can do to help your baby through the process. First, over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol, can help manage the pain of teething. Second, your child may love to have their gums massaged. For some children, putting pressure on their gums soothes the pain. They may also love to gnaw on things, such as a frozen teething ring or washcloth. Also, you can put many teething toys in the freezer or fill them with frozen fruit and offer it to a teething baby.

If you are unsure what to do to help your teething baby, you will want to consult with our dental office. We can help you discover ways to soothe your baby.
