Posted on 10/15/2023 by Life Long Dental
A series of dental individual teeth implants at Life Long DentalChoosing the right solution for your teeth depends on several factors. When you want to replace one or more teeth, you have a few options like dentures and implants. However, some factors, have to be considered, like price, preference, and the health of your jawbone and the surrounding teeth. Dentures and implants have their advantages and disadvantages that should be considered and discussed in detail before having them. Let us delve into the details.

Similarities

Dentures and implants serve the same purpose. For instance. they are used to help the patient to chew foods that they might not be able to eat, they also are used to support facial muscles and improve the patient's speech patterns. In addition, they increase the patient's self-esteem and confidence in front of people since they give you a perfect and aesthetic smile. However, there are also some significant differences between the two. These differences should also be considered before deciding on your smile.

Differences in the procedures

Let us first look at implants. An implant is a metal post that replaces the root portion of a missing tooth. They require a strong bone, to place the screw-like implants. The implants are capped with crowns on top. They have significantly gained popularity, especially among adults aged 55 to 64. That is according to a study done in 2018.

A dental implant is made by extracting a damaged root a hole is then drilled into the jawbone. A metallic post is then implanted deep into the bone and the top is fitted with a crown after the bone grows around the post. A couple of months pass to finalize the procedure using an abutment (the piece to which the crown is fitted).

Dentures on the other hand are removable prosthetic teeth that can be fitted into the mouth regardless of the bone state. They can be a complete set that replaces all the teeth on the upper or lower jaws or partial dentures that replace a few missing teeth. They are made by first taking an impression of the gums. The dentist also studies the bite and the tooth alignment to make sure the length of the dentures is specific for a precise fit. They are then made to mimic natural teeth and gums. They are held in place with a special adhesive that bonds them to the gums.

Conclusion

Dental implants are said to be more expensive than dentures and other restorative procedures. This might be due to the complexity of the procedure.
