How Bad Is Sugar For Your Child's Baby Teeth?

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Life Long Dental
How Bad Is Sugar For Your Child's Baby Teeth?Baby teeth serve as adult teeth' temporary substitutes; hence they are crucial. They should be kept in place until it is time for them to emerge since they serve a purpose in talking, eating, and smiling.

Why do people get cavities?

For a cavity to form, you need three things: a tooth, bacteria, and sugar. It only takes a few seconds for the bacteria on your teeth to combine with the sugar you eat or drink and turn it into acid. This acid is what eats away and breaks down the tooth enamel. When sugar and bacteria work together over time, they cause tooth decay, leading to cavities and, in some cases, early tooth loss. It is this loss that often makes things a lot harder.

Loss of teeth

Tooth decay is directly caused by sugar. When you eat sugary foods, these molecules combine with saliva and bacteria in your mouth. Note that plaque forms on teeth when such elements combine. Plaque that stays on teeth can break down the enamel, which can lead to cavities. To keep bacteria and plaque from building up on your teeth, brush as soon as you can after you eat.

Gum sickness

Sugar can make the gums in the mouth get sick. It may get worse if you do not treat gum disease when it starts. When gum disease gets worse, it can turn into periodontitis, which affects both the gums and the bones below them. Periodontitis is caused by bacteria that can spread to other body parts, like the joints, connective tissue, and organs like the kidneys, liver, and lungs.

When you have periodontitis, bacteria can build up and cause a blood clot that blocks arteries. Heart disease can be brought on by gum disease. You may need oral surgery if Marietta's gum disease has gotten too bad. A periodontist in our practices can help if you have advanced periodontitis. Call us to book an appointment today.
