What Surgical Procedure Treat Oral Cancer

Posted on 1/23/2023 by Life Long Dental
What Surgical Procedure Treat Oral CancerOral cancer, which develops in the mouth and throat, is often treated by surgical treatments. Typically, a head and neck surgeon, a dentist, and a speech therapist will work together to execute these treatments. A partial or complete glossectomy is a popular surgical operation for eliminating oral cancer.

Depending on the size and location of the tumor, a surgeon may remove a small portion of the tongue or the whole tongue during this treatment. After this, the excess tissue is sewn together to form a tongue. During this procedure, lymph nodes in the area may also be removed to cut off any potential blood supply to any cancerous cells.

Other Surgeries Can Be Done To Treat Oral Cancer

Alternatively, a maxillectomy may be performed to remove the affected area of the upper jaw (maxilla). The lymph nodes around the mouth and the palate may also need to be removed during this operation.

The surgeon will replace the jaw using donor bone or synthetic materials. Mandibulectomy, the removal of all or part of the lower jaw (mandible), and laryngectomy, the removal of the larynx, are two more surgical procedures that may be performed to treat oral cancer (voice box). Reconstructive procedures to improve form and function may be a part of these operations.

The painful and uncomfortable healing process after oral cancer surgery may last for quite some time. However, many individuals can successfully overcome this condition and return to a productive and healthy life with a trained surgical team and a supportive network of family and friends.
